Activity Assignment โ€“ Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2025

The World Economic Forum recently released its Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2025. These innovations could shape industries, improve lives, and change how we work in the near future. Some are already in early use, while others are still in research and development.

Hereโ€™s the video and PDF we mentioned in class:

For our next lesson, please:

  1. Pick 2โ€“3 technologies from the PDF/video that you find interesting (or more if youโ€™d like!).
  2. Feel free to read through the PDF or scroll through the video to your selected tech.
  3. For each technology you choose:
    • Explain what it is and what interests you most about it.
    • Write down 2โ€“3 discussion questions you would like us to talk about in class.

โ–ถStructural Battery Composites

Materials that act as both a battery and a structural part, reducing weight in vehicles, planes, and devices.

Important because: they can improve efficiency and reduce material use.

โ–ถOsmotic Power Systems

Generate renewable energy from the natural mixing of freshwater and saltwater.

Important because: they can provide sustainable power in coastal regions.

โ–ถAdvanced Nuclear Technologies

Smaller, safer, and more efficient nuclear reactors.

Important because: they offer clean, reliable energy.

โ–ถEngineered Living Therapeutics

Genetically engineered living cells that can treat diseases.

Important because: they enable personalized and highly targeted medicine.

โ–ถGLPโ€‘1s for Neurodegenerative Disease

Using GLPโ€‘1 agonist drugs (from diabetes/weight-loss) to potentially treat Alzheimerโ€™s and Parkinsonโ€™s.

Important because: they offer new hope for slowing brain diseases.

โ–ถAutonomous Biochemical Sensing

Self-operating sensors that monitor biological or chemical changes.

Important because: they support early disease detection and environmental monitoring.

โ–ถGreen Nitrogen Fixation

Sustainable ways to produce ammonia for fertilizer with much lower emissions.

Important because: it strengthens food security and reduces climate impact.

โ–ถMetasurfaces

Ultraโ€‘thin materials that precisely control light and sound.

Important because: they enable better imaging, communications, and sensing.

โ–ถCollaborative Sensing

Networks of devices sharing data to create detailed, realโ€‘time maps of environments.

Important because: it helps disaster response, smart cities, and navigation.

โ–ถGenerative Watermarking

Hidden digital markers in AIโ€‘generated media to show authenticity.

Important because: it helps fight misinformation and deepfakes.
